How to Make Reading Books Fun for Children
Reading is one of the most rewarding things in life, although your child may not share the same opinion. It is important for children to read, however, especially during their early years. You can help make reading books fun by involving yourself and your child in the process.
Choose Age Appropriate Books
Children’s books are made to be enjoyed, but if you have an emerging or struggling reader, you do not want the books to be frustrating. Reading books can be fun when you make sure that the book is at the correct level for your child.
First assess your child’s reading skills. The books you buy should have a few new words, but not so many that your child is frustrated. Do not simply choose books based on the age range they are intended for, but take the time to look through the book to make sure that it is one your child can read without becoming frustrated.
Let Your Child Choose
Reading books is a great way to learn, but remember that reading is supposed to be fun when you buy children’s books. Allowing your child to choose at least one or two books per month will promote reading, and give your child an incentive to read.
Get Involved
One of the best parts of reading, especially for younger readers, is that they have a special time with you. You can choose children’s books that are based on plays, where you each have parts, and read these out loud to encourage your reader to build their reading skills.
You can also incorporate children’s books about holidays, or choose books that have characters your child is interested in. Reading books becomes an adventure when a child can relate to the characters in the story.
Start a Series
If you find a children’s book series that your child likes, then build up that collection of books. Children love familiarity, and will often read an entire series of books many times before they are ready to move on to another set of books. Older children especially love children’s books that have been made into movies, which are often also series of books.
An added bonus to reading movie based books is that books are released before the movie. Kids are often willing to read the newest book in a series so that they do not have to wait on the movie to find out what happens next in the series.
