Motivating Older Kids To Read

Older children present specific problems to parents who are trying to encourage their children to read. You can motivate your child to read in several ways, including allowing your child to choose his or her own books.

Make It Rewarding
Once your older kids have established their reading skills, you can make independent reading rewarding by offering them incentives to read. These incentives do not have to be expensive, as long as they mean something to the child.

For example, your child, like other children, may value TV time. You can set up a plan where your child receives a certain time allotment for television for each minute that they spend reading books. Anything that works for your child is acceptable, as long as you continue to read aloud to your child at your scheduled times.

Your child values the time you spend reading books together, so do not use that time as part of the incentive plan.

Talk To Your Child
When you are ready to buy children’s literature, take some time to ask your child which books they are interested in. You may be surprised to know that they love to read non-fiction books about animals, fantasy books and even books that are intended for adults.

If you are just beginning a reading routine with your child, then you can buy books online. Allow your child to help you choose the books you purchase, and then ask for some honest feedback. Once you know which books your child likes, you can easily buy books online. Additionally, there is a much larger selection of books online, giving your child more options to choose from.

Read For Pleasure
One of the best ways to motivate your old child to read is by reading books yourself. Your child learns from you, and watches the things you do for clues as to what is expected from them. When your child sees you reading books in your spare time, they too will pick up reading as a habit.

Keep a Selection

You will want to keep several different types of children’s books in the house to help motivate your child to read. Children, like adults, will become bored if they do not have at least a few different books to choose from.

When you buy books online, you can often pick up sets of books for a very low cost, making online shopping an excellent option when you are learning about your child’s reading preferences.
